Dapper Dan Gets His Due

Luxury fashion label, Gucci, made headlines today when Olympian Diane Dixon called the brand out for copying a design Dapper Dan made for her decades ago. The brand fairly quickly acknowledged that it referenced his design when creating the jacket, and that it had reached out to collaborate with him.

The New York Times put together a nice profile one of the key conduits of hip hop’s impact on the broader fashion world. Dapper Dan is credited with using the logos of luxury brands for his designs for hustlers and hip hop stars.

In his pitches for Walker & Company, the maker of Bevel products, CEO Tristan Walker often talks about how black culture shapes America, and American culture shapes global culture. Dapper Dan is a good example of this.
