  • Akon raised $6B for his futuristic cryptocurrency themed city, Akon City
  • Freedom, Georgia belongs to 19 Black families on roughly 97 acres of land

Before the world was introduced to the mythical idea of Wakanda, Akon was trying to build one in Senegal. Akon spent years convincing potential investors that Akon City, a futuristic cryptocurrency themed city, was a profitable development. Now he’s raised $6 billion from investors and construction has started. With his example and several others throughout history in America, small groups of friends across the country are considering the idea of building their own American dream instead of fighting for a respectable share. Here’s how you can do the same.

Why This Matters: There is a lot to learn from the past as we morph into tribes focused less on surviving and more on progressing. Let’s start with Freedom, Georgia that belongs to 19 Black families on roughly 97 acres of land. They will have state of the art homes surrounded by greenery and peace of mind. These 19 families recently made headlines for their ambitious approach to accumulated wealth while maintaining community.

There was Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Rosewood in Florida, and Seneca Village in Manhattan, NYC that were all thriving communities

If you own a Co-Op, you own shares in a property with a group of people who also live on the property. The difference is purchasing land and building properties with the cooperation of other homeowners you are familiar with. You are building a kinship that share the responsibility of the land as a whole, easing the strain of property maintenance, taxes, zoning and potential discrimination. Right now in the U.S. the interest rate for a fixed 30 year mortgage is 2.9%. With low interest rates we could really raise children with a village of our own making.

The idea of building a village is not far fetched. Forty acres of land in Arizona and Nevada are being sold for less than $20k. There are whole towns that are up for sale across the nations and abroad for less than $1 million. Both options are financially feasible with a group of trusted friends and family. If our ancestors did it once before, maybe we can do it better now.

Situational Awareness: Throughout history there have been many prosperous Black communities. There was Black Wall Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Rosewood in Florida, and Seneca Village in Manhattan, NYC that were all thriving communities built on the determination and wit of Black people. These same communities were destroyed with one swoop of racism. Today, Black people are not only hitting the streets for social justice, but creating their own streets within the Utopias they are building for themselves.
