  • Jeezy’s Sports 99 agency will represent NBA and NFL players
  • Other rappers who launched sports agencies include Master P, Jay-Z & Lil Wayne

Rapper Jeezy is getting into the sports agency world with the launch of his company Sports 99, that will represent NBA and NFL players. Hip hop’s influence on athletes is unmatched and the business of sports has leveraged black music as a draw for athletes and fans alike, in the multi-billion dollar world of sports agencies.

Why This Matters: Prior to Jeezy getting in on the sports agency movement, there have been other rappers operating in the sector. Only three artists have been able to make real noise with sports agencies: (1) Master P, No Limit Sports Management (founded 1999, now defunct); (2) Jay-Z, Roc Nation Sports (founded 2013); and (3) Lil Wayne, Young Money APAA Sports (founded 2016). Roughly 75% of NFL players are represented by only 17% of all certified agents.

Forbes ranked Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Sports #26 on the World’s Most Powerful Sports Agencies, 2018 list with $28.9 million in commissions and $935 million in contracts. Even athletes themselves are poised to take more control over their finances and business dealings. LeBron James business colleague Rich Paul helms Klutch Sports which lands at #30 on Forbes World’s Most Powerful Sports Agencies, 2018 list with $25 million in commissions and $625 million in contracts.

Situational Awareness: The Atlanta rapper  previously wrote a song honoring Cam Newton’s MVP season in 2015 called “Hit Um” and has had his music featured in NBA 2K video games. Let’s see how his relationship evolves with athletes and their respective leagues through Sports 99.
