  • The Travis Scott Meal at McDonald’s helped fuel a double-digit surge in sales during September
  • During McDonald’s Q3 it noted that comparable sales in the U.S. rose 4.6%

Demand for the Travis Scott meal gave a major boost to McDonald’s (MCD -0.61%) third quarter sales. The rapper is credited with the resurgence of its runaway $6 meal success, due to him promoting it to his devoted more than 44 million social media followers. Its “strategic marketing investments” with Scott helped fuel a double-digit surge in sales during September.

Why This Matters: During the golden arches third quarter it noted that comparable sales in the U.S. rose 4.6%. This is in stark contrast to its 8.7% decline they had suffered in the second quarter due to the coronavirus. The “Travis Scott Meal” helped drive McDonald’s highest U.S. monthly sales in nearly a decade despite COVID-19 closures that have limited much of its business to drive-through and pickup orders. Thanks  to the success of Scott’s partnership, McDonald’s will increase its quarterly cash dividend by 3% to $1.29 per share.

Previously Mc Donald’s had been struggling to lift sales across the country since before the pandemic. Globally the burger chain’s same-store sales declined by 2.2%, as many stores overseas were shut down due to the pandemic, according to the company.

What’s Next: Scott’s promotion ended on October 4. Now the fast food giant is expanding to another musical artist, J Balvin, who until November 1 is promoting his favorite meal, a Big Mac, fries with ketchup, and an Oreo McFlurry. Will you be ordering?
