There should be no excuses in 2020 as to why parents shouldn’t have the ability to select the schools their children attend. Both public schools, and charters, are primarily funded on a per-student basis, so fewer students means less money. It’s important that families struggling to make ends meet are armed with the power to select the best educational path for their children.
Why This Matters: Over the past few decades, minority parents are seeing school choice as a strategy to improve educational outcomes for their children. Test results from the “Nation’s Report Card” demonstrate why minority and low-income families desperately need school choice. At nearly every grade level from K-12, educational achievement gaps in math and reading between whites and minorities have been unchanged for decades.
Schools that serve mostly students of color receive $23 billion less funding than schools with mostly white students
Parents now have more tools and organizations available to guide them through the school choice process. Specifically, voucher programs that use government funding to send low-income students to private schools are supported by 79% of African-Americans. That percentage drops to 65% when asked about voucher programs for all income levels. Schools that serve mostly students of color receive $23 billion less funding than schools with mostly white students, according to EdBuild researchers.
What’s Next: National School Choice Week is this month and provides an excellent opportunity for parents to learn more about the school choice process. More than 50,000 events will be held from January 26 through February 1. Since National School Choice Week is nonpartisan the spotlight will be on all forms of school choice from traditional public schools, to public charter schools and private schools.
