Around 650 Black NFL retirees have had their dementia tests automatically rescored since the league finally decided to stop using “race-norming.” This practice had been used by the NFL to statistically adjust scores that account for the race or ethnicity of the person being scored when it comes to brain injuries. Previously, hundreds of Black retirees were denied payouts in a $1 billion concussion settlement with the league, due to the recent change in testing 61 Black retirees qualified for moderate-to-advanced dementia awards.
Why This Matters: Let’s remember that this started with the 2017 NFL class action lawsuit settlement, where the league agreed to pay former football players who were diagnosed with brain disease amounts up to $5 million dollars for their sport related injuries. On average former players are to receive $200,000 if they had early-stage and moderate dementia.
Now, the 61 Black NFL retirees who qualify for moderate-to-advanced dementia award will receive an average of $600,000. There are nearly 250 other Black NFL retirees showing early signs of dementia, according to the Associated Press. They can receive up to $35,000 in medical testing and treatment.
Situational Awareness: Armed with decades of research and best practices, properly addressing this issue should have been an easy touchdown for the NFL. They should always be ensuring all former players get access to quality healthcare, treatment, and compensation based solely on the severity of their injury, without their race mattering.
