  • After more than three decades Formula 1 is returning to Africa through a landmark 10-year agreement with Rwanda
  • With more than 100 million Formula 1 fans across Africa, the deal signals a major opportunity to capitalize on the multibillion-dollar motorsports industry

Formula 1 is finally shifting gears toward Africa and Rwanda is in the driver’s seat securing the pole position. The global motorsports powerhouse announced a historic 10-year agreement to bring the African Grand Prix to Rwanda in the early 2030s, marking the sport’s first race on the continent since the 1993 South African Grand Prix. For a continent that has historically been sidelined from Formula 1’s expanding global footprint, the agreement signals a new era of economic opportunity and cultural visibility.

Why This Matters: Africa’s return to Formula 1 is ultimately about economic participation, ownership and access. The move represents more than a victory lap for African motorsports enthusiasts. It’s a major business play that could transform Rwanda into a global destination for sports tourism, infrastructure investment and international commerce.

Formula 1’s expansion also reflects Africa’s growing importance as a consumer market. According to Formula 1’s official announcement, the continent already has more than 100 million F1 fans, with nearly 60% of followers in key sub-Saharan African markets younger than 35. That youthful audience represents an attractive opportunity for global sponsors, broadcasters and brands seeking deeper connections with African consumers.

For seven-time Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton, Africa’s return to the racing calendar carries significance beyond competition. As Formula 1’s first and only Black driver, Hamilton has repeatedly advocated for the sport to establish a lasting presence on the continent. His efforts have highlighted the importance of representation in a global industry where Black drivers and motorsports professionals remain underrepresented.

The real opportunity for African businesses lies in securing meaningful participation in the economic ecosystem surrounding Formula 1, from hospitality contracts and media rights to technology partnerships and workforce development. A successful Grand Prix could demonstrate that Africa is not simply a growing market for international sports, but an essential partner in building their future.

What’s Next: The planned Grand Prix will take place at a purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, approximately 40 kilometers south of Kigali, near a new international airport. The venue is expected to accommodate 100,000 spectators and support events beyond racing, creating potential revenue streams through entertainment, conferences and tourism.
