- Small businesses using AI are four times more likely to report hiring gains than cuts, according to the 2026 QuickBooks AI Impact Report
- Entrepreneurs betting on AI now have data on their side, but only if they know how to use it to grow, not just automate
For years, the warning has been the same: AI is coming for jobs. The data from businesses actually using it tells a different story. Small businesses using AI are four times more likely to say it helped them hire than say it led to cuts, according to the 2026 AI Impact Report from Intuit QuickBooks. The technology is fueling growth, not layoffs.
This comes at a moment when more Americans than ever are betting on themselves. One in three U.S. adults say they plan to start a new business or side hustle in 2026, a 94% jump from last year. Entrepreneurship now ranks as the number one wealth building strategy in the country, ahead of saving, investing, or earning more at a traditional job.
Why This Matters: The numbers inside the report make a strong case for Black entrepreneurs who have historically been told to wait and see on new technology. Among U.S. businesses using AI, 78% say it improved their productivity, 43% report increased revenue versus just 2% who report a decrease, and 27% say AI shortened their workday. That changes the math on hiring. When the same lean team can produce more and serve customers faster, every dollar invested in an employee works harder. But 54% of business owners say they have skipped or reduced their own pay at least once in the past year to cover bills or payroll. And for 12% of owners, a late payment of less than $1,000 was enough to cause financial trouble. Knowing the full cost of each employee before hiring is not optional. It is how you protect everything you built.
Situational Awareness: AI is not replacing the most important work. Across every country tracked in the report, employee management and legal decisions consistently rank at the bottom of AI use cases. Business owners are deliberately keeping judgment and relationship-driven work in human hands. The competitive advantage in 2026 is not the tools. It is the people behind them. Black entrepreneurs who move now, build their teams, and use AI to stretch their capacity will be best positioned when the next wave of consolidation comes.
