America’s Fertility Crisis Is A Ticking Time Bomb

By Claire Moraa

  • U.S. fertility rates have dropped to a new low of 1.6 per woman
  • The birth rate however is on the rise with a 1% jump in 2024

Women are having children in their later years and some are even foregoing motherhood in its entirety. The median age for a mother to give birth in the U.S. is at 30 years and it keeps rising. This has seen the fertility rates drop to a new low of 1.6 per woman from a previous 2.7 in the 1960s. Still, the birth rate is on an increase with a 1% jump in 2024. Unless the fertility rate stabilizes or rebounds, this uptick may be short-lived.

Why This Matters: If the fertility rates are low but birth rates are increasing, is there anything to worry about? This presents a demographic paradox. Birth numbers are purely numerical but the fertility rate is a structural issue. Within no time, the U.S. may find itself in a position where it cannot reproduce sufficient future generations. A declining fertility rate can lead to slower population growth or even population decline. Fewer births mean a smaller future workforce, which can result in labor shortages and reduced economic productivity over time.

The U.S. already depends on migrant muscles so it might have to pick this tab again especially with the recent immigration raids and visa restrictions to keep the population up. If not, America will be stuck with an aging population which then increases the dependency ratio. Over time, sustained low fertility can lead to population stagnation and increased pressure on aging-related support systems. There’s no ideal situation here. So, instead of celebrating a small surge in birth rates, it’s time to confront the declining fertility rates before irreversible damage is done.

Situational Awareness: Women did not just wake up and decide they did not want children or have less of them. They’ve been put in situations where they had to choose between surviving and child-bearing. Child bearing should feel like a blessing rather than a burden. There’s no one fix-all policy but it’s time the government started making family life more feasible and attractive.
