Cutting Back Is In While Subscriptions Are Out

By Claire Moraa

  • At least 60% of Americans are considering their paid subscriptions due to economic uncertainties
  • The global subscription economy is projected to reach $2.13T by 2034

That Hulu or Netflix subscription package is moving lower on most Americans’ priority list and with good reason. Of course everyone would like to keep up with the Joneses or whoever is trending nowadays but these bills just won’t let up. There’s always a bill that’s due at the end of the month and subscription services are quickly losing their grip on most of Americans’ wallets. In fact, 6 out of 10 are more than willing to cancel their auto-renewals because it’s just not adding up.

Why This Matters: Consumers are increasingly reevaluating where their money goes. As living costs rise and economic uncertainty grows, people are trimming non-essential spending especially recurring costs like subscriptions. Its easier to do away with your DoorDash subscription because you can make your meals at home and save more money. Inflation has been on the rise with tariffs spooking price surges across various industries while salary increments have largely stagnated failing to keep up with the inflation rates. In fact, salaries have failed to keep up with the rising inflation rates three years in a row.

The subscription-based businesses like food delivery, entertainment, and software are not entirely blameless. With multiple overlapping services, Americans face tough choices about which subscriptions provide real value. And while the industry is doing well; the global subscription economy was valued at approximately $487 billion in 2024 and projected to reach $2.13 trillion by 2034, they need to reconsider their model. Bundling services, offering more flexible subscription plans, or focusing on enhanced user experience and content quality could help boost subscription rates but it has to be something worth the cost because Americans have to choose between having a meal and watching their favorite show.

What’s Next: Subscription cancellations can serve as early indicators of consumer confidence and spending trends. Affiliated companies need to find ways of customer retention without losing profits otherwise, they stand to lose both.
