Why Gen Zs Are In The Quick Hire-Fire Cycle

By Claire Moraa

  • 60% of companies fired a Gen Z in 2024
  • Gen Zs are highly unsatisfied and the least happiest generation in the workplace

Would you quit your job if there was no option for working remotely? Probably not in this economy. Well, a Gen Z wouldn’t think twice about it. In fact, 30% would forego this opportunity. Factors like dress codes, work life balance and unsatisfactory remunerations are just some of the top reasons they would quit or get them fired. A closer look reveals that this has become the norm. Gen Zs are a quick hire and fire. So why can’t they be absorbed in the job market and leave once they reach the retirement age?

Why This Matters: It’s no secret that the Gen Z demographic is entering the workforce during unprecedented times. There is economic uncertainty, frequent layoffs and restructuring, especially with A.I replacing a lot of manpower in workplaces. And while there may be a skills gap, insufficient experience and an unforgiving economy, many companies are not willing to accept that this demographic is unique. They know what they want and they’re not afraid to let their demands known. For the older demographic which happens to be on the hiring seat, they have labeled Gen Zs as entitled, lacking work ethic and difficult to work with. So much so that 90% of hiring managers agree that recent graduates need a class in etiquette training.

Unlike their predecessors who valued job security, Gen Zs are putting their mental health first and are continuously seeking new experiences that breathe life into them and make them fulfilled. This is the same generation that would quit a job without having another lined up. It is no surprise that 33% of Gen Zs believe in self employment and a whopping 54% would quit if their salary demands were unmet.

Situational Awareness: While companies may shun Gen Zs at this time, the millennials and Gen X are entering the aging demographic soon enough and they’ll have no choice but to turn to the ‘entitled’ Gen Zs. Employers may need to rethink their hiring and retention strategies to better accommodate the needs and potential of this generation of workers. The struggles of Gen Z workers are significant because they represent the future of the workforce. If they continue to face challenges in gaining a foothold in the job market, it could have long-term implications for economic growth and stability.
