Passport Ready: Thousands of Americans Are Suddenly Applying for UK Citizenship

By Sabrina Lynch

  • Sharp rise in Americans applying for UK citizenship with applications up 42% last year
  • Nearly 2.5 Million Black people live in the UK as second passports are now a lucrative tool to diversify business portfolios

Lin Manuel’s Broadway musical Hamilton called it in the song ‘You’ll be Back’, because a great American return to the British isles is indeed underway. British citizenship applications by U.S. nationals reached record highs last year during as Trump returned to the White House. Specifically, 8,790 Americans pursued citizenship through registration or naturalization in the UK last year, a massive 42% increase in applications than 2024. With other countries being eyed as better homelands, it does beg the question what exit strategies are being planned for 2026 that will see more people leaving the West.

Why It Matters:  It’s not the greatest sign that the American dream is thriving, particularly for African Americans who are opting for a better, and safer, life abroad. The UK is home to one of the largest Black diasporic populations in Europe, providing a solid homebase to build generational wealth that the U.S. currently does not afford

Black Americans wield more than $1.8 trillion in annual buying power, which is a critical contributor to the U.S. economy.  When this economic influence is ignored, communities uproot and go elsewhere where they feel their influence will be appreciated and reciprocated.

This is where Great Britain comes in, offering stronger banking options, tax planning, and home ownership outside metropolitan cities as favorable incentives. Cities such as London and Manchester have also become hubs for African, Caribbean, and African American entrepreneurship too. Such are the perks that come with global mobility offered through dual citizenship.

What’s Next: Second passports are now a lucrative tool to diversify business portfolios, which bodes well for budding Black entrepreneurs and their net worth. However, the appeal to move to the UK is in itself a double edged sword. Being Black and prosperous in Britain is a challenge in itself, with 3 in 5 People of Color being vulnerable to having their British citizenship stripped, 12 times more than their white counterparts. Whilst the British government is attempting to encourage high earners to nest with one hand, there is a concerted effort to limit net migration more broadly with the other.
